Hurricane Preparation Checklist for Southwest Florida Homes

by Eduardo Roman on Oct 13, 2026

Hurricane preparation starts with knowing whether your protection works. The Atlantic season runs from June 1 through November 30, with a historical activity peak around September 10. That climatology is not a deadline for an individual storm. Use this checklist before each season and revisit it whenever your home or protection changes. The National Hurricane Center provides the seasonal context.

Check the Protection You Already Own

  1. Operate every shutter. Run each roll-down shutter fully closed and open according to its instructions. Watch for binding, unusual sound, bent slats or a curtain that does not travel properly. Close and lock each accordion. Match removable panels to their openings and check their tracks and fasteners. Stop forcing a system that sticks.

  2. Check backup controls. If your motorized system has battery backup, charge and test it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Locate and practice any supported manual override. Make sure you know which remotes or switches operate which openings, and keep needed controls accessible.

  3. Clean and inspect. Follow the maintenance instructions for the exact product, including the approved cleaning and lubrication methods. Check fabric, tracks, housings, locks and hardware. Coastal salt exposure can increase care requirements. Do not substitute a general lubricant recommendation for the manufacturer's directions.

  4. Document your home. Keep dated photos of openings and protection, product labels, invoices, approval documents, permits and final inspection records. Store a backup of important records where you can access it if you leave the home.

  5. Review every opening and your insurance. Include windows, entry doors, garage doors and skylights. Know your hurricane deductible and ask your insurer whether it needs an updated wind mitigation report. Our guide to Florida windstorm insurance and wind mitigation inspections explains the documentation.

  6. Plan the lanai and patio. Know where outdoor furniture and loose items will go. An ordinary insect-screen enclosure is not a substitute for rated opening protection. Hurricane screens can be specified for eligible wide openings; our screen and accordion comparison explains the choices.

Arrange Repairs Before You Need to Deploy

A shutter that will not close or lock needs attention before a storm approaches. AHT services and repairs all brands with our own crews. Request a visit through our maintenance and repair team and describe the problem so we can check the work and availability.

Plan New Protection Around a Confirmed Project Schedule

AHT has the fastest turnaround in the industry because we manufacture and install locally with our own crews rather than outsourcing the work. The schedule for your project still depends on its product, measurements, approvals, permitting and current availability. Get the timing in your written project plan instead of relying on a generic number of days.

Consider each opening separately. Hurricane screens, accordion shutters, roll-down shutters and impact windows and doors serve different layouts and priorities.

If you are considering DIY protection, confirm current stock, delivery, the exact product approval, and the installation requirements for your opening before ordering. A temporary solution still needs the correct product and installation.

When a Storm Is Approaching

Follow local emergency guidance and your product's deployment instructions. The National Hurricane Center's preparedness guidance covers alerts, household plans and preparation. Complete outside preparations before tropical-storm-force winds arrive. Rated opening protection does not make a lanai a storm shelter or replace an evacuation instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one deadline for ordering new hurricane protection?

No. Start early and ask for a project-specific schedule. Custom fabrication, permits, electrical work and installation availability can affect completion, so do not assume a system can be installed before an approaching storm.

Can I rely on shutters that have not been used in years?

Test and inspect them first. A shutter that binds, will not lock or has damaged components needs service. Check batteries and any manual override too. AHT repairs all brands and can help assess whether repair or replacement makes sense.

What should I choose for a large lanai opening?

Have the opening measured and compare systems rated for that size and mounting condition. Hurricane screens can preserve a filtered view when deployed, while accordion and roll-down shutters have different storage and operation features. The right choice comes from the actual opening and your priorities.
